it doesn’t get much better than fall in new england

almost ten years ago, my partner’s aunt moved to maine. it’s taken the budget of a non-college kid and waiting through a pandemic until I finally had the opportunity to visit. the whole time we were there, we were hearing apologies about the weather, but I didn’t think to complain once. it was gloomy, but that didn’t take away from the enjoyment, we just had to look through another lens to appreciate it. plus, I guess I’ll have to go back when the weather is “better”… bummer.

we flew in wednesday and did nothing but settle in, order some pizza, and sit around a backyard fire - the perfect welcoming.

thursday kicked off with a keurig cup of coffee and a slow morning before we headed to the Portland Head Light mid-day to wander around a bit.

after getting our steps in, we were in need of some grub, and what better way to satiate our hunger than a lobster (that’s pronounced [lob]-[stuh]) roll? we stopped at The Lobster Shack to fuel up and do some meandering on the rocks along the shore. there was something special about those carefree, patient steps we took along the stony shoreline that hit a perfect combination of fresh-air therapy and child-like freedom. to do it by my favorite person’s side was something special - it’s always those little things that stick with me.

with our hunger satisfied, we needed something to quench our thirst. next stop: Après. we all tried their cider that was mixed with bourbon or brandy (can’t remember - I know it was boozy and started with a “b”) and topped with maple syrup cotton candy. I’m not sure if it was the cider or the liquor that warmed my bones; whatever the cause, I was feeling cozy.

ten out of ten, would recommend.

we ended our adventures at Portland Lobster Company before heading back home for another night around the fire.

friday kicked off with another keurig cup of coffee and a slow morning before piling in the highlander and making our way up to camden, maine. we had intentions to do a short hike and grab some food. the fog had a different idea and this was the only time the weather actually impacted our plans.

so what’s one to do?

skip the hike, enjoy the sights the streets of camden have to offer, and see if we can find a beer? I guess that’ll have to do.

saturday brought us two flights, a quick layover, and a strong urge to book a trip back to new england.

until next time, maine.
